History of the Chamber

The Hamilton Chamber is recognized as being one of the older Chambers in Canada having been formed in 1845 by a group of merchants headed by Isaac Buchanan.

Over the years the Hamilton Chamber has played an active role in many different areas including:  organizing the Council of Social Agencies, the Community Fund and the Family Welfare Bureau which were forerunners of the present United Way; enticing McMaster University to relocate from Toronto to its current location in the west end of Hamilton; was the primary force behind the creation of the Dundas and Ancaster BIA’s; provided the leadership to create the area’s first Economic Development Commission and the present Visitor and Convention Bureau; and launched the Hamilton Economic Summit in 2008.
